Valeriana officinalis, 1897 Franz Eugen Köhler, Köhler’s Medizinal-Pflanzen. Valerian contains actinidine which mimics the odor of cat urine, the herb can be used like catnip to attract cats. It had been used to bait traps to attract rats. The Pied Piper fairy tale describes the Pied Piper of Hamelin, Germany using his magic pipes and valerian to attract rats.
